Festivals and Community
The name “Sankofa” is taken from the Sankofa bird. When the Sankofa bird lands, it looks back at its tail. In Ghana it means go back and retrieve your past. Our drumming take you back to West Africa with traditional rhythms. The drumming and shakers are high intense and will have you up on your feet dancing as if you were in the motherland.

The journey to West Africa first starts with a welcome song “Fanga Alafia” a traditional song from Nigeria sung in the Yoruba language. It means "welcomes and blessings”. The journey continues with African Folklore, storytelling, using musical instruments such as the iron bells which represent mother and child. The playing of the balaphon (xylophone) and several African dances help tell a story about learning to share.
Just when you think you have heard it all, comes the created sounds of a Tropical Rain Forest. The audience will hear the sounds of birds, frogs, water fall, seed pods, rain stick, and cocoons. Most people can’t believe that music comes naturally from nature. Close your eyes and imagine being there as the Tropical Rain Forest creates a memorable and thoroughly entertaining experience for audiences of all ages.
The show ends with Chakaba (pronounced shah-kah-bah) an African stilt dancer standing 12 feet tall, dances to the beat of the drums.
*Assemble is 45 - 60 minutes long.
